Description:
Temperature: Difference between Heat and Temperature.

Various Thermometers: Liquid-in-glass, Gas, Platinum Resistance, Thermocouples and Pyrometers.

The advantages, disadvantages and the applications of the above thermometers.

Quantity of Heat: Calorimetry, Heat Capacity, Specific Heat Capacity, Determination of Specific Heat Capacities by the following methods: Mixtures, Cooling, Electrical and Continuous flow.

Heat exchange with the surroundings - Newton's Law of Cooling) and its correction.

The two specific heats of gases, their relation, and variation with temperature.

Change of State: Latent Heats of Fusion and Vaporization. Work done during the above process.

Determination of the specific Latent Heats of Fusion and Vaporization by the Mixtures, Electrical and the Bunsen Ice Calorimeter methods.
Gases: The gas laws of Boyle, Charles and Pressure. Derivation of the general gas law.

Relation between the two specific heats of gases using the idea gas law.

Isothermal and Adiabatic expansions and the derivation of work done during each of the processes.

Andre's work on Carbon dioxide. The critical phenomena and Liquefaction of gases.

The Porous-Plug experiment, Joule-Kelving effect and the Inversion of Temperature.

Real Gases: Deviations from the ideal gas behaviour (pV-P diagrams).
The Van der Waal equation.

Differences between Ideal and Real gases.

Transfer of Heat: Conduction: Basic theory of heat conduction, thermal conductivity definition and determination for good (Cearle's method) and poor (Lee's methods conductors. Heat flow through a compound wall.

Convection: Definition and the Convection heat transfer coefficient.
Radiation: Its nature and detection. The Termopile and Bolometer. Black Bodies heat and light spectrum, energy distribution spectrum. Prevost theory of exchanges, Kircohhoffi law, Wiens displacement law, Rayleigh-Jeans law and Plancks law.

Solar constant temperature of the sun and the theory of radiation.
Thermodynamics: Difference between thermodynamics and Heat transfer.
Thermodynamic Terminologies and Equilibrium.

1st law of thermodynamics, internal energy relationship between Cp and Cv using thermodynamics. Reversible and Irreversible processes.
Carnot's theorem, heat engine, efficiency and practical cases. Second law of thermodynamics, simple theory of entropy.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.
